Do you have High Cholesterol?

In August, Herbalife sent out an email to it’s distributors asking if anyone would like to do a trial of their new product Beta Heart.

For those of you that know me, Herbalife has made a huge difference to my life, so I decided I’d give this a go.

I was accepted onto the trial and had to have my bloods taken before I started the products, which of course I did.

I used the product for 4 weeks and then had my bloods taken again.

The results were amazing, my cholesterol had dropped by nearly 20% (as you will see in the picture below).

5 Simple Holiday Tips!

A few people have asked me for advice for when they are on holiday.

Remember, you are not following a diet plan, you are following a nutrition plan and working to change your lifestyle to a Healthy Active Lifestyle, so in real terms the same rules apply to when you’re at home.

Ok, you may drink a little more and you may eat some nice treats but generally as long as you follow these other tips, you shouldn’t gain nearly as much as you probably have previous years.

1) Drink 3-4 litres of water a day

2) Eat a protein based breakfast (never skip breakfast)

3) Reduce your intake of Simple Carbohydrates (anything beige)

4) Make sure you have vegetables/salad with every meal

5) Keep active:- swimming, walking, dancing (minimum of 30 mins per day)

Don’t diet all year for your holiday, just change your lifestyle and make healthier choices throughout your life.  Then when special occasions and holidays come around you can afford to have a treat.

Remember, you are fuelling your body!

8 Reasons You May Not Be Losing Weight

8 Reasons You May Not Be Losing Weight

1. You don’t have enough muscle.  More muscle burns more calories, make sure you are a fat burner.

2. You are eating too little, slowing your metabolism down.  In other words you are turning yourself into a fat storer rather than a fat burner.

3. You are not drinking enough water.  Aim to drink a minimum of 2-3 litres a day.

  • helps control portion sizes
  • flushes out toxins
  • Keeps us hydrated
  • Stops us drinking sugary drinks/tea/coffee

4. Leaving out important food groups. eg. healthy fats and healthy carbohydrates.

5. You are skipping breakfast.

  • starving body = slow metabolism reaches for sugary snacks more.

6. You are stressed out.

  • binge eating
  • exercise helps reduce stress by releasing endorphins to make you feel happy

7. You eat out alot – this doesn’t mean you can’t lose weight.

  • stick to fresh foods
  • watch out for sauces
  • know which foods groups to have on your plate
  • avoid high salt, transfat foods and sugar foods
  • avoid sugary drinks and limit alcohol

8. You are eating too many “diet” foods.  Diet foods may cut out sugar but add chemicals, and bad fats.  Also extra sodium and preservatives.

Fat Free = added sugar.

Watch your portion sizes, prepare foods at home using fresh foods as much as possible and get your recommended daily dose of balanced food.

Aim for 30% Protein, 40% Carbohydrates (complex carbs) and 30% Healthy Fats.

Are You Drinking Enough Water?

Are you drinking enough?

Find out if you’re drinking enough water by watching out for these five signs of dehydration:

Your mouth is dry

This seems so obvious – if you’re thirsty, you’re probably not getting enough fluids. True enough, but keep in mind that sometimes your thirst mechanism doesn’t kick in until you’re already running fairly ‘dry’ – which is one reason why athletes, especially, are encouraged to drink on a schedule. Also, as people age, the thirst response isn’t quite as strong, which is why establishing a healthy ‘drinking habit’ as a young adult is so important.

Your urine is dark

When your body is well hydrated, you can tell by looking at the color of your urine. If it’s relatively clear – enough that you could read the newspaper through it – then you’re good. Without enough water, your urine becomes concentrated, and dark in color. Your urine should look more like lemonade, and less like apple juice.

You’re constipated

Proper bowel function relies on adequate fluids, so if you’re constipated, it’s possible that you aren’t drinking enough water. Most people consider fibre the most important factor in ensuring a well-functioning digestive tract. But in order for certain fibres (the water-soluble ones) to properly do their job, they need to soak up water, which causes the fibres to swell up – adding bulk and aiding elimination.

Your breath isn’t as sweet as it could be

When your mouth gets dry, there’s less saliva to wash away the naturally occurring bacteria that live there. As the bacteria feed on little bits of food and skin cells in your mouth, they start to multiply, leaving your breath a little stale – think “morning mouth”. Water helps because it keeps the saliva flowing and can help reduce bacterial build-up.

Your workouts aren’t as good as they could be

Water is critical in helping your body produce the energy your muscles need to fuel your workouts. When you’re not well hydrated, you may feel your energy flagging. That’s why getting enough fluids before and during exercise is so important.
